This excellent puzzle is both abstract and straightforward to solve. Below are graded hints leading to the solution, which is a two digit number.

The top two lines are intended to teach you the trick to decoding the bottom line and finding the value of the '?'.

The lines are not so much equations as rebuses. Think in words, not numbers, although the final answer is ultimately a number.

The top line is '6 - S = 9', which is better rendered as 'SIX - S = NINE'. Substracting the S from SIX leaves you with IX, which is the Roman numeral for nine.

FIVE - E - F leaves you with IV which is the Roman numeral for 4.

ELEVEN - N - the 3 Es leaves you with LV which is the Roman numeral for 55.
