The solution to this puzzle requires two pages in the book and a probable Google search to get. Below are graded hints leading to the solution, which is ultimately a common three letter word. It assumes you know [key.142] -- if you don't know it, then don't continue.

Initially, you need to use the first two lines to decipher the third. Know that the first number in the 2nd row is a 9, not an ornate 2 (as it appears)

The first line is a series of chess pieces. How does the word 'chess' relate to the symbols? There are 5 letters in 'chess' and five pieces--notice that the 4th and 5th pieces are the same? Must be an 's'.

Similarly, the 2nd row is a line of billiard (pool) balls. How does 'billiard' relate to the 2nd line?

The 3rd line uses the balls/chess symbols to spell the word 'braille', and the clue at the bottom says 'next' as in the next page.

On puzzle 144 there are three dice. Each of those dice have a 'six' showing. Focus on those three sixes and ignore everything else on the page.

In Braille, the letters of the alphabet are arranged on a 2X3 grid just like the 6 pips of a die. Notice how each of those dice 6s have a few black pips with the rest white? Google 'braille alphabet' and try to identify the 3 letters on the 3 dice.

The black pip on the '6' side of the first die is an 'A' in braille. The black pips on the '6' side of the second die is an 'I' in braille. The third is an 'M'. The answer is AIM.
