Are the 5 blanks supposed to be populated by the key.81 or is that just a general tip about the puzzle?

I'm not sure what form the answer should be in. I've tried many 6-letter combinations of the input letters and the output letters on the sides (and the other sides that the outputs aren't going to) but no idea if this is even the format the answer is looking for. Will the answer be obvious when I see it? Is it a real word? Very confused.

the water doesn't just switch the direction the arrows point, but the whole arrow. So it switches the top part, too

i’ve looked At all the clues. Got a glass with water and used it. I can’t get anything apart from letters which make no sense. Can someone lend me a hand please. This whole refraction thing and direction stuff is really getting me confused.

I tried flipping the letters and straws as suggested in precious hints, but all I’ve been able to do is gather a sequence of letters that don’t mean anything. I tried a couple of different words though I still assume that it’s supposed to be Key 81? Certainly that’s how it’s labeled, unless it’s just misleading?
