It bothers me that

the down line doesn't mean to skip the b and move on to the a, as the horizontal lines do mean to skip the letter

Below are some graded hints leading to the solution, which is ultimately a common 8-letter word.

Everything you need to solve the puzzle is on the page, and no outside info is needed. The key information you need is in the two lines starting with 'membe[r]s' and 'been', and the figure at the bottom of the page.

The figure at the bottom of the page is a 'path of letters' to take through the lines of the text. The [r] in the figure and the text is the starting point.

Start by writing down an 'r', and then write down the letter to the left of it (an [e]). The dash in the figure means to skip the next letter to the left (a 'b'), and then write down the next 3 consecutive letters. Then jump down a line (not two lines as the figure might imply) to the 'been trying. . .' line and write down the first 2 letters of the line (a 'b' and 'e'). Finally, skip the next 4 consecutive letters and write down the one after that. You have written the keyword.

And the solution is below. DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER!!

what i hate is that sometimes you already know what to do but the book forces you to use hints due to it's own formatting error of the puzzle. so frustrating just like this one.

it's just a bother when the horizontal lines means to skip a letter but this is not true for the vertical line.

also, there is four horizontal lines on the second string of letters that would make you stop at "y" when it was supposed to be on "r" to make a word.

I have solved the riddle and my answer matches the spoiler given earlier but it won’t accept the answer. I’m using iPhone 7 Plus. Anybody else had this issue?

Got it now. I had a space after the last letter and that was the problem

The dashes also work on spaces.
