I’m totally lost in the maze. No idea how to get out - or where to start for that matter

I am stuck here. Do I need to align the maze path differently?
I feel there's only one way out which would be:

G, A, left but not all the way to the M, down but missing the R and O, right, down, left and possibly hitting the g, down then to end with E, R.... GAgER?
I can't find any word near this path which is accepted as an answer.
