Ok, got it in the end but only because I've visited American relatives. No one in the UK ever represents that in that way.

I'll pile on that the font chosen for both the book text and the answer website text is...sub-optimal. I had the correct key for puzzle 13, then my spouse "corrected" it to the wrong word, and then after looking in this forum we realized we should've gone with the original reading.
