Ok to all the folks saying
Spoiler!
subtract and all this other. S is the 19th letter...A is the 1st....19-1=18 not 17! Stop saying look for the pattern or trying to be cute...if you click on the spoiler tag...help folks!

Without outright giving the answer, don't do simple subtraction of number value.
Count instead the number of characters between the two letters. Give yourself 2 number lines. A -> Z and Z -> A. In the standard count positive difference between two word characters you've assigned. In reverse, count negative (example of the letter above is D and the letter below is B, use this one). Thus the number of characters between A and S is 17 characters.

Here's the complete method for anyone who is frustrated and just wants to work out the solution NOW!
Spoiler!
I found it easiest to do it like this:
1) Write out the letters A to Z in a row
2) Highlight the corresponding letter pair
So if your 2 words were AARDVARK on top and MACARONI on the bottom, your first letter pair is A-M
Now count the letters in between the highlighted letters (so in my example, there are 11)
If you go forward through the alphabet from the top word to the bottom, your number is positive
If you go backward, it will be negative
Write this number down
Repeat for all the letter pairs
Add all the numbers up
The total is the answer

Spoiler!
It's 34
