If I do what these hints suggest, The underlined letters in CLOUD are L & U (from "fault"), and the letters directly beneath those are T & R. Then on the second set, the underlined letters in CRAFT are A, F, & T. The letters directly below those are A, C, & E. That gives me "TRACE" as the answer, but it's not being accepted.

Okay, I just figured it out.

I was thrown off by the suggestion NOT to rearrange the letters. I see now that I need to arrange them in FAULT order, meaning, the letter under F is first. Following that order, I get the answer.

This puzzle is a bit tricky and requires an intuitive leap or two. Below are some graded hints leading to the solution, which is a less common five letter word. It assumes you know keys 123-126. If you don't know them, then don't continue.

Keys 123-126 are CLOUD, STORM, CRAFT, and SPACE. Write CLOUD in the top set of 5 boxes, STORM in the 2nd set of boxes, and so forth.

The first page in these books I genuinely don’t get. Had to use the solutions and hints, but it still makes no sense to me whatsoever

Somebody please help me understand how the logic to solving this puzzle can be established from the pairs of letters??

You have the some of the same letters in both pairs that relate to the process in question.

Just seems like a total and complete reach to me. Sometimes when you take a hint you feel annoyed with yourself for not seeing something but with this one I don't see how someone could genuinely logically piece this together unless they'd seen a very similar puzzle before
