I slid all the clues over to make numerals. I converted to decimal so I could add them easily, then converted my answer back to the proper format. I keep getting “wrong” answer when I put that in the answer box. What am I missing?

This is not a particularly complex puzzle, but does require a bit of outside information and has a small quirk at the very end that can hang you up. Below is a graded hint system leading to the solution
Spoiler!
1) This puzzle requires a small familiarity with Roman numerals. Find out how to make numbers from 1-20 and the value of L and M if you don't know already.

2) The caption 'slide and add' is the key to solving the puzzle. Ignore the background pattern of the page and focus on the 10 dark Roman numeral-looking symbols. Mentally slide each symbol to the left or right until it visually aligns with some other symbol. As you do, you will end up with 5 Roman numerals in a mostly vertical pattern:

XII
IV
LX and III
M

3) Convert each of these Roman Numerals to their english equivalent and add them together.
And the answer (and quirky hang up) is below:

4) 12 + 4 + 60 + 3 + 1000 = 1079, which is the answer. It needs to be entered as '1079', and not the Roman equivalent of 'MLXXIX' which would have been a much cooler and better answer :)

Spoiler!
Each line has an upper and lower part. The full Roman numerals only form when sliding them all to the side
