Some of these hints were very confusing for me.. I would say the most important thing is
Spoiler!
Every one if the five groups is a digit not a number
and
Spoiler!
The fourth group has either an error or as someone already said was drawn in a very crazy way

I am confused. I don't understand how the 5 groups of vertical lines on the bottom of the page correspond to the horizontal/vertical rows at the top of the page with the symbols. Help! I can't understand any of the other hints either.

Please tell me someone is still active on this page. I have done majority of the book with no hints but for some reason this one has me totally stumped. I pretty much understand the correlation from top to bottom, but figuring out the top is my problem! I cant finish some of the others without this key and i hate loose ends!

This puzzle is easy to overthink, and does have a glitchy component to it, so here is a graded hint system leading to the solution:
Spoiler!
1) the upper section is a 6X6 column/row grid with symbols arranged in very important ways. The bottom section is 5 images with each image also having 6 columns of uniform length. The fact they both have 6 columns is key to solving the puzzle. The answer is a 5 digit number, with each image being one of the digits.
Spoiler!
2) The darker areas of the images at the bottom indicate which parts of the upper section you need to focus on to find the value of the image.
Spoiler!
3) In the first image, the dark portions cover the upper 2/3 of the first 3 columns. Look in the upper section and focus only on the top four rows of the first 3 columns. Doing so, will reveal 11 symbols arranged in the pattern of a number 9. 9 is the value of the first image.
Spoiler!
4) Doing the same for the other image is pretty straightforward except for the 4th image. It is wider than normal and has one extra symbol in it messing it up a bit. Taking out one symbol towards the bottom right will leave a number 8.
And the final answer:
Spoiler!
5) putting the 5 numbers together yields 91682, which is the answer.

This must have been a misprint or oversight. Number 4 clearly reads 61 (as published). No wonder we didn't get it!

Spoiler!
The fourth one doesn't add, doesn't subtract, is single, but has an annoying guest that just doesn't belong
