This is a great and challenging puzzle that doesn't require any outside information, but does use a prior page in the book. Below are some graded hints leading to the solution, which is ultimately an 12-letter scientific word.
Spoiler!
Look closely at the hand on the page. Notice that it has an 'otherworldly' form (even tho it still has 5 fingers) and has 10 letters, 2 for each digit, with one of them black and another white. This makes a set of 5 black letters and 5 white ones. Where have you recently seen this hand shape before in the book?
Spoiler!
Notice that the hand shapes on page 109 are the same otherworldly shape as the hand on pg 113. Ignore everything on pg 109 this time except the hand signs, which should be used from top to bottom. The colors of the hands (black/white) are very important now.
Spoiler!
There are 12 letters in the solution word, and the 7 hands display a total of 23 fingers (not helpful). BUT, 7 hands of 5 fingers make 35 fingers possible, and 35 - 23 = 12 however.
Spoiler!
Start with the top hand which is white and making a 'hang loose' sign. If that hand was laid on top of the one on pg 113, the thumb and 5th finger would cover the OC and TI on the hand (respectively). What is not covered is the black letters OMR and the white letters PHO on the 4th - 2nd fingers. Because the 'covering' hand is a white one, we use the white exposed letters PHO. PHO are the first 3 letters of the solution.

And the solution is below. DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER!!
