Spoiler!
Count the fingers. Relate that to the structure or the letters.

This puzzle contains some twists that will hang you up if you're not careful. Below are some graded hints leading to the solution, which is an obscure 7-letter word.
Spoiler!
To help you focus your efforts, know this about the puzzle:
Everything you need is on the page (i.e. no other material in the book or Google is needed).
The fact that some hands are black and others are white is irrelevant to this particular puzzle.
The up arrow signifies that you need to start at the bottom and work up.
The fingers that are showing is important, the ones that aren't are irrelevant.
Spoiler!
It is significant that all of the letters use straight lines for their shape. No curved lines at all.
Spoiler!
Consider the first line at the bottom -- NWTE. To make an 'N' you need 3 lines, to make a 'W' you need 4, a 'T' 2, and an 'E' 4. The hand has 3 fingers raised, so 'N' is the only one with a number of lines that match the number of fingers. 'N' is the first letter.

And the solution is below. DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER!!

Before finding the true solution (with hints), I noticed that
Spoiler!
if you read the letters bottom-to-top, left-to-right, you found the words "map two ice" hidden in there. I was convinced that this was related to all the story elements about cold walls and such.
That really led me on a wild goose chase.
