I don't think that there is anything resembling parentheses in the puzzle. We solved it the only way you can to get the correct result. It is only looking back at it now that I realize that the approach we used was not correct according to how the mathematics should be done.

Yeah, there nothing looking like "classical" half moons on the mug. Hmm, thought a bit more, and I think that the trick is the following: The time you get when the mug is the right side up is the "day time", (12:15) whereas if you turn the mug upside down you get a moon over the clock and thus "night time" (05:45). They still add up to the same t...
