I don't have a book with me. This is a frequent scenario for me as I completed it quite a while ago. So I can't check exactly what people mean.

However. Having completed this puzzle without help, I can tell you that you are overthinking it.
Spoiler!
The dark sections of the lower parts correlate to the SECTIONS of the top part you need.

Bearing in mind that I cannot see the puzzle, let me try and tell you what I mean.
||||||| is seven lines, but what you actually want is the spaces between them. Including top and bottom.

The bottom level helps you make the top level into something you can enumerate.

Thanks for the post. But I can't think anything. I can't find the connection. I leave it for awhile. If you see the book, give me a hint. Thanks anyway.

Spoiler!
I am really not sure how any of you got confused. Seven rows in the top, seven sections on the bottom vertical lines. The bold sections tell you which bits of the top to use. You're looking to create five numbers.

The last one is tricky.
Spoiler!
This is purely example, and is done without book reference, so bear in mind that will not give you answers.

The above pattern means you need to use the top five sections of the relevant vertical section from the top part.

The bottom patterns are representations of the top pattern telling you which bits to use.

Once you know which bits to use, you're looking at something similar to a seven-segment display. Make some numbers.

The last one is tricky and cheats. It is only one number.
