Hey! I believe I have the sequence down; however, I'm having some trouble with the adding. I keep getting the same number, but it's not right. I just need help with the second part of this riddle, because it's kicking my ass.

So, I don't have the book with me, but...
Spoiler!
Let's say that you have two words: DUCK and PENS

DUCK

PENS

D => P
4 => 16
11 (number of letters between them)

Taking that logic across, you get:

11 + (-15) + 10 + 7 = 13

Apply that method, and see if you can't solve it.

My wife and I have both been stuck on this one for almost a month, we give up. I'll list my process below. I'd love for someone to contact me directly and just tell me the answer. It's not fun anymore...
So the goal is to find the number of letters that's in between the top and bottom letters and then add all of those together. If I add them properly I get 42 (17+21+15+14+(-8)+(-6)+3+(-14)). If I treat the negative numbers as positive, I get 54. The site accepts neither of these.

I clicked the spoiler tag for my previous post, but it doesn't look to me like it applied. Sorry, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
