This rebus puzzle suffers from some poor design and execution and may unnecessarily confuse people. Below are some graded hints leading to the solution, which is a 6-letter scientific word. You may want to copy the page and work off of the copy to avoid ruining the book.
Spoiler!
The rebus at the bottom is more correctly rendered ' scorpion - s - ? + a ' . You have to figure out the ' ? ' part of the rebus, which is what solving the upper figure will get you.
Spoiler!
The upper figure is a collection of 8 animals in outline with their names below it. The turtle has been shaded in and it's name has been crossed off. Do the same for the other 7.
Spoiler!
With all the animals shaded in, the white space left in the middle reveals three numbers (not letters, and they are not necessarily oriented right side up). Those three numbers are the start of a famous mathematical number denoted by a Greek letter.
Spoiler!
The numbers are 314, and (if you intuitively add a decimal point) 3.14 is 'pi'. That is the ' ? ' in the rebus, making the complete rebus: scorpion - s - pi + a.

And the solution is below. DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER!!
